Most guides on how to start a peptide business stop at “find a supplier and build a website,” and that’s where the hard part starts. We build, host and maintain online stores for peptide sellers, and the owners we work with lose the most time to payment processors that close accounts, web hosts that give them 24 hours to leave, and websites that fail a processor’s review. This guide walks through starting a peptide business in the order that saves you the most time and money, then gives you a free profit calculator so you can test your numbers before you order inventory.
One note first: we build websites, we’re not lawyers. Where the law comes up, we point you to the FDA and to attorneys who work with peptide companies. Talk to one before you launch.
Here are the nine steps in the order we’d follow them:
- Pick your business model: research-use-only store, reseller brand or telehealth.
- Form the company with a lawyer, get an EIN and open a business bank account.
- Choose a supplier and set up independent lab testing.
- Build the store on WooCommerce, not Shopify.
- Add the compliance pages and checkout confirmations processors look for.
- Apply to a high-risk payment processor early and line up a backup.
- Host the store somewhere you can move in an afternoon.
- Set up shipping software and a clear shipping policy.
- Market through channels you own, then check your numbers in the profit calculator.
Is a peptide business profitable?
It can be, but high-risk processing fees, payment reserves, lab testing and ad costs eat margins fast. Run your own numbers before you buy any inventory.
The fee that surprises new owners most is payment processing. A normal online store pays around 2.9% plus 30 cents per card sale on Stripe’s standard pricing. Peptide stores can’t count on mainstream processors, and one high-risk offer our client received charged 10% per transaction and held another 10% of sales for 180 days (the full offer is in our guide to selling peptides online). That gap alone can decide whether a store makes money.
Peptide business profit comes down to a handful of numbers: what an order is worth, what the product and its testing cost, shipping, processing, refunds, ads and your fixed monthly costs. Our peptide business profit calculator below does the math for you.
What kind of peptide business should you start?
Most new sellers choose between a research-use-only store, a reseller or white-label brand, and a telehealth business with licensed prescribers. Each has different rules and payment options.
- Research-use-only (RUO) store. You sell to researchers, label everything “not for human consumption” and make no health claims. This is the most common model and the one payment processors and web hosts treat as high risk.
- Reseller or white-label brand. You buy finished, tested products from a supplier and sell them under your own brand. It’s the fastest way to become a peptide vendor, but you still own the website, the payments and the compliance.
- Telehealth business. Licensed prescribers and a pharmacy handle the medical side, and your brand handles the patient experience. It costs more to set up, but it’s usually the route toward mainstream payments. Many of these businesses apply for LegitScript healthcare certification, a program for pharmacies, telehealth providers and other healthcare companies.
The regulators are paying attention to this category. The FDA keeps a list of bulk drug substances that may present significant safety risks in compounding, and popular peptides such as BPC-157 are on it. Which model you pick changes what you can say, who you can sell to and which processors will talk to you, so decide it with a lawyer before you build anything. We cover the legal questions in more depth in our peptide selling guide.
How do you set up a peptide company legally?
Form a business entity with a lawyer’s help, get an EIN, and open a business bank account early, because processors ask for months of bank statements.
If you’re working out how to start a peptide company, the entity comes first. The SBA’s guide to choosing a business structure explains the basic options, and an LLC is where most founders start. Peptide companies often need more than that. One law firm that works with peptide companies writes that a single LLC is usually not the right structure for a research-use peptide company and suggests founders consider a holding company setup. That’s a conversation for your attorney.
Once the entity exists, get an Employer Identification Number. The IRS issues an EIN online for free, so skip any service that charges for it. Then open the business bank account right away, even before you have sales. High-risk processors commonly ask for your operating agreement, several months of bank and processing statements and a voided check. Every month the account has been open makes that application easier.
Where do peptide sellers get their products?
From manufacturers and white-label suppliers, checked by independent third-party lab testing, with a certificate of analysis for every batch you sell.
No website can make up for a bad batch, so vet the supplier before anything else. Before you place an order, ask for:
- A batch-specific certificate of analysis (COA), not a generic sample report
- Results from an independent lab, not only the supplier’s in-house testing
- Purity, identity and storage information you can publish on your product pages
- Minimum order quantities, lead times and how they handle a failed batch
- Packaging and storage instructions for shipping
Then pay for your own third-party testing on top. Payment processors reviewing a peptide website expect to see a COA for each product, and independent results are what make those reports believable to buyers. Put testing in your budget from day one, because it repeats with every new batch.
What website platform should a peptide business use?
WooCommerce on your own hosting. Shopify restricts drug-related products and can’t guarantee the checkout confirmations processors require, so peptide stores outgrow it quickly.
Shopify’s prohibited products list for its Shop channel includes “drugs and drug-related products” and “medication.” Even when a store finds a way to run on Shopify, high-risk processors want every buyer to tick a research-use and age box at checkout, and Shopify’s quick-buy paths can skip it.
WooCommerce has no monthly platform fees and runs on your own WordPress site, so you control the checkout, the compliance fields and which payment gateways you install. Nearly every peptide store we work with runs on it. Jacob wrote up the design side, from product pages to checkout, in his notes on peptide website design.
If you start on Shopify, moving later is real work. When we moved one peptide store from Shopify to WooCommerce, it took about a week. We carried over 15 affiliates with their links and history and 11 wholesale accounts, and the owners stopped paying about $230 a month in Shopify apps.
What does a peptide website need before launch?
Real contact details, a 21+ age policy, research-use disclaimers, a required checkout checkbox, lab reports, no health claims and complete policy pages.
Processors review your website before they approve you, and these are the items they asked our clients for:
- Contact information, including a physical business address
- A 21+ age policy with an age confirmation at checkout
- A “research use only, not for human consumption” disclaimer on product pages and in the footer
- A required, unticked research-use checkbox at checkout
- No medical, wellness or anti-aging wording anywhere, including product and category names
- A visible certificate of analysis for each product, plus purity and storage details
- Refund, shipping and terms pages, and a statement of where you do and don’t ship
Build these in from the start. Adding them after a processor flags your site costs you weeks you can’t get back.
How do peptide businesses take payments?
Through a high-risk processor that approves you knowing what you sell, plus a backup option installed and tested before launch. Apply early, because approval is slow.
Payments are where the new stores we work with stall most often. One of our clients spent two months on a high-risk processor’s review (a paid compliance review, website changes and bank statements) and was declined by the bank at the end. Another store’s launch waited about six weeks on a processor after the website was finished. So apply as soon as your company and bank account exist, and build the website while you wait.
Plan for a backup from day one. Manual options such as Zelle work in a pinch but add work to every order, and when one store tried a crypto-based card checkout as a backup, only about one in five attempted payments went through. Our guide to selling peptides online covers processors, fees and what they check in detail.
Where should you host a peptide store?
On hosting you can move in an afternoon: a dedicated server, off-site backups, Cloudflare in front and a second host ready if the first one acts on a complaint.
Big cloud hosts act on complaints quickly. A brand-protection firm working for a major drugmaker once filed an abuse complaint against a store we manage, and the cloud host gave us 24 hours to remove the site or lose the server’s IP address. We had the store running on a different server the same day. That only worked because the setup was built to move.
Your domain matters too. We move peptide clients’ domains away from GoDaddy to Cloudflare’s registrar (here’s how Cloudflare and GoDaddy compare on price).
Our peptide hosting plan is $50 a month. We track which providers will and won’t host peptide stores, keep off-site backups, and can put your store on a new server by the next business day if a host acts.
How do you ship peptide orders?
Use shipping software connected to your store for labels and rate shopping, follow your supplier’s storage instructions, and publish where you will and won’t ship.
Hand-writing labels stops working after the first busy week. We set up peptide stores with ShipStation, which lets you automate rate shopping across 200+ parcel carriers, print labels in bulk and send tracking emails automatically. Keep your packaging in line with the supplier’s storage instructions, and make sure your shipping policy says plainly which states and countries you ship to, because processors look for that statement.
How do you market a peptide business?
Build channels you own, like email lists, affiliates and wholesale accounts, and treat paid social ads as a channel that can disappear overnight.
Ad platforms restrict this category, and accounts get shut down. One owner told us ad shutdowns were what stalled his revenue. Start collecting emails from your first visitor, give affiliates their own links, and build relationships with wholesale buyers who reorder without ads. Search traffic helps too, as long as your catalog isn’t hidden behind a login. Before you spend on ads, read what Meta, Google and TikTok allow for peptide ads.
How much does it cost to start a peptide business?
Inventory, lab testing and payment reserves are the big costs. The website and hosting are smaller, predictable lines you can price before you start.
Here’s what we can price for you, plus the costs that depend on your suppliers and processor. Our prices are what we charge today. For the processor line we’ve used the one real offer from our peptide selling guide, an $800 onboarding fee and a reserve of 10% of sales held for 180 days.
| Startup cost | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Business entity and legal review | State filing fees plus attorney fees. Get a quote from a lawyer who works with peptide companies. |
| EIN | Free from the IRS. |
| First inventory and lab testing | Set by your supplier’s minimums and your testing lab. Usually the largest line. |
| Payment processor | One real offer: $800 onboarding, 10% per sale, 10% of sales held for 180 days. |
| WooCommerce store setup | WooCommerce itself has no platform fee. We charge $50 an hour for store work, and a peptide store cleanup with gateway setup starts at $500. |
| Moving off Shopify | About $1,400 and about a week for a peptide store migration. |
| Hosting | $50 a month on our peptide hosting plan. |
| Maintenance | $100 a month for updates plus a monthly check of your checkout and compliance pages. |
Don’t forget the reserve when you plan cash. If a processor holds 10% of every sale for six months, that money is earned but unavailable, and a growing store can feel broke while it’s profitable on paper. The calculator below shows how much a reserve holds back each month.

Estimated results
$4,005
net profit per month
- Monthly revenue$16,500
- Gross profit (after product, shipping, fees, refunds)$8,655
- Net margin24.3%
- Profit per order before ads$57.70
- Break-even orders per month81
- Months to earn back startup costs2.5
- Cash held in reserve each month$1,650
You clear break-even with 69 orders to spare. Remember the reserve: that cash comes back months later, so keep enough in the bank to cover it.
How to read your results:
- Profit per order before ads is the number to protect. If it's thin, every ad dollar has to work very hard, and a single processor change can wipe it out.
- Break-even orders tells you how many sales you need each month just to cover ads and fixed costs. Compare it with what your ad budget has realistically bought so far.
- Cash held in reserve isn't lost, but you won't see it for months. Budget for it as if it were a cost while you grow.
- Try the processing fee at 2.9% and then at 10%. The difference shows why getting approved by the right processor matters so much.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone start a peptide company?
Most people can form the company, but processors, banks and suppliers decide whether you can actually sell. Expect detailed document requests and a close review of your website during payment approval, and get legal advice on what you can sell and where.
How long does it take to start a peptide business?
The website can be ready in about a week. Payment approval is usually the slow part. One store we launched waited about six weeks on a processor, so apply early and build while you wait.
Can I start a peptide business on Shopify?
It's a poor fit. Shopify restricts drug-related products and can't guarantee the research-use checkbox processors require at checkout. Nearly every peptide store we work with runs on WooCommerce instead.
Do I need a lawyer to start a peptide business?
Yes, we strongly recommend one. Your business model, entity structure, product wording and shipping rules all carry legal risk, and processors read your website closely. A lawyer who works with peptide companies is worth it before launch.
What is the biggest mistake new peptide sellers make?
Relying on one payment processor and one web host. Either can shut you off with little notice. Launch with a backup payment option tested and hosting you can move to a new server the same day.
How to start a peptide business: the short version
Starting a peptide business comes down to doing the slow things first: the entity and legal review, the bank account, the processor application and independent testing. Then build a WooCommerce store that passes a processor's review, host it somewhere you can leave in an afternoon, and check your numbers in the calculator before you scale ads.
We build, host and maintain peptide stores, from the checkout and compliance pages to backup payment options and hosting that's ready to move. Tell us about your plans or call us at (919) 444-2005, and we'll show you where a new store usually gets stuck before you spend money finding out.
